Let The Countdown Begin

We are approximately 3 months away from our journey departure date and getting excited. The itinerary is rough, but during the following months we will smooth out the plans for a fantastic trip. A little bit of volunteering, some house sitting and a lot of relaxation and experiences to look forward to. Stay tuned as we fine tune this blogging thing and pack our bags for an affair to remember.

After years of the tedious work grind with scattered, short vacations we decided to rearrange what we thought were priorities and really change the way we live. Last year we sold our home, cut our square footage in half and started to downsize and decompression from a superfluous life that we were starting to resent. With no children to break our stride we started throwing bags overboard to streamline our way to a healthier and much happier way of living. Traveling, the sense of adventure, the thrill of discovery coupled with a lot of learning and intrigue from the people and cultures we encounter will now be our norm. Our itinerary is rough and “open for development”, but our intention to learn, grow, give, share and thrive is mighty. We will trek, camp, safari, house sit, hostel, bike, run, volunteer and sail and look forward to sharing it all with you on our blog.

Our Travel Tips:

-When staying in a hotel with a gym there typically is a fresh, bottled water dispenser. Travel with a water bottle and fill it up as much as possible…you paid for it!
-Always take a travel bag of tissue with you. Use it for the obvious as well as for the bathroom visits where most likely you will not find an ample supply.
-Go to the market and get lunch/dinner. Save some money and have left overs. Stroll the aisles at a local food market and get your meal there. You will find you spend less, get more and also get an inside look at what the locals truly eat.
-Careful when sitting in cafes in Europe. Sure it is an experience...people watching and all, but you may be charged a hefty "seat tax" for sitting in the outside seating area. You may consider purchasing your food at the counter and then take it to go and enjoy it on a park bench or in a park.
-Bring some zip lock bags along. Bring a couple large and small ones. I use the small ones to put my wallet in when on beach vacations. Put the wallet in it and dig it under the sand under your blanket when no one is looking for a safe and secure hideout while having fun in the water.
-When you arrive at your destination and did not do the pre travel guide read just stop off at the local post card selling establishment and take a look at the post cards. They'll tell you what to see and the name to ask its location.
-Bring a 7 day pill container filled with sugar, salt and any of your favorite spices for cooking in that place you rent.
-A carry on roller board is all you need. If it cannot all fit in the bag do not take it. Afterall, if you need more socks, undies, etc. I bet you can find one abroad. Plus this way you'll have a momento of your trip.
-When in Rome.. it is okay to drink from the water fountains. Take a water bottle and fill it up at the many locations around the city and save some Euro!
